Maaliskuussa saa ensi-iltansa lasten animaatio-, liike- ja äänityöpajoissa syntynyt teos Tarinoita Juhanan ja Katariinan linnasta. Tanssitaiteilija Rea-Liina Brunou, äänisuunnittelija Pekka Tuppurainen ja minä olemme työskennelleet Pääskyvuoren koulun kuudesluokkalaisten ja Arkipelag-musiikkiopiston tanssinopiskelijoiden kanssa viime keväästä alkaen. Nyt työpajojen sisältö on sovitettu Turun linnan Bryggman-saliin kaikkien kiinnostuneiden nähtäville.

Stories from the Castle of Juhana and Katariina is a performace based on childrens animation, movement and sound design workshops. Dance choreographer Rea-Liina Brunou, sound designer Pekka Tuppurainen and I have worked with Pääskyvuori school's sixth graders and Arkipelag music school's dance students since last spring. Now the content of the workshop's is adapted to the Turku Castles Bryggman hall for everyone to see.

Tuli on irti! / Fire!

In 2010 the Finnish Science Centre Heureka commissioned Tuhru to make animations for Tuli on Irti! Fire! -exhibition at Logomo, Turku.

The animations are projected over a scale model of Turku in the notorious year 1827 when nearly all of the city burned down. The spreading of the fire is depicted with lights and smoke, with our animations illustrating the human perspective and details from the burning houses.

Elina and Ami here on the set with musician Pekka Tuppurainen (Ilma Records). Thanks to Pekka and the staff of Heureka, especially Jouko Koskinen and Jussi Kahlos, they were fun to work with.

Miia Tervon dokumentti nuoresta naisesta, joka haluaa rakkautta, muttei tiedä mistä sitä etsiä. 19 min. TaiK/ELO/2009.

Elokuva sai kolme palkintoa Tampereen elokuvajuhlilla 10.3. – 14.3. Se sai kansainvälisen kilpailun Grand Prix'n ja kotimaisen kilpailun alle 30-minuuttisten sarjan pääpalkinnon. Lisäksi se valittiin EFA Tampere -ehdokkaaksi, joten se kilpailee parhaan eurooppalaisen lyhytelokuvan tittelistä.

Ami won the "Art in a Hospital" competition. I made these big sympatic figures, who stay or visit the hospital. The art will be placed on walls of the new Turku Hospital.

Anyway...

Stage Fright is screened at LOOP videoart festival in Barcelona.
You can see it everyday at Duduá gallery/shop, owned by the very best Alícia Rossello. The festival seems real nice, videos are screened around the city in more than 100 venues, galleries, museums, shops...

Picturing this happening makes me miss Barcelona a lot.. .. sigh.

Hmmm. I can't say I like it that much but it feels like a relevant video to post about.

Easily comparable to Blu, the most referenced animation phenomena of 2008, but still very different. This is like Blu minus the social dimension. More turning into itself with the music emphasizing the melancholy. The traces of chalk on the board are nice but watching it I can't help wishing it would get more abstract all the time and extend itself beyond the chain of chalkboards.

Closing a circle... the first post on our blog was about Jenny Wilson and now there is reason for another as her beautiful second album Hardships! finally came out. The whole thing is up on her myspace. As is often with records that I've waited for years to come out, it took a couple of listens to truely get into it. Now I'm in love hands down and will go look for the double vinyl version of it tomorrow.

I'm super excited about this month in B-galleria as we are exhibiting Jaakko Pallasvuo, Matti Sumari and Julia Selin. The group show entitled Mammals is up 7.2-1.3.2009. Be sure to visit! Vernissage is this Friday the 6th at six. Info in Finnish here.

Jaakko and Julia's collaborative zine Megaverse & Other Stories will be presented in the show. Rarely do collaborations achieve the ease of Selin's and Pallasvuo's as their styles blend into each other so well. The pictures are accompanied by Selin's stories and the book as an object is also nicer than your usual flimsy zine, it's more like a book really. A very limited edition came out from Milano Chow's small press Medium Rare.

Tomorrow is the opening of B:s experimental christmas show that we're in. Only a hint of what's to come can be seen in the opening because every day a new piece appears in the gallery space. A group of B-artists makes work about a mystery person called Barbara. The process will be documented every day in the B blog!

Come and see the Napa Illustrations show KARKKIA! at B-galleria. Tuhru takes part in the show with a window painting and three candy themed pieces. Opening on Friday 31st of October from 18.00-20.00, welcome welcome!

This weekend I discovered this amazing artist from the internets. He is John Broadley who makes beautiful serigraphic books. Some of his work has been published by Le Dernier Cri.

It was really difficult to choose which images to put here, but I am especially fond of his book cover designs. His work is worth a further look, so please visit: John Broadley's Books.
